Art to Rescue
What keeps an artist going?
Why do most of the poems romanticize heartbreak, tragedy, or sadness?
How is it possible to have varied interpretations of any form of art be it a portrait, music, literature, sculpture, or poem?
In the quest to unravel these intricate mysteries of art-part of humanities, a way out for me was to indulge myself in it. This not only got me a piece of first-hand knowledge but also broadened my opinions on other artists’ craft. Though still naive, I frequently find myself being perplexed by the masterpieces of literature, music, and dance.
One often draws an opinion about a matter by his wisdom. Attainment originates from the bittersweet occurrences of an individual’s being. The sentiments attached to these instances result in our judgment of the subject.
Humans can sense. Therefore, emotions are what we feel. It is a form of expression which is often verbally communicated by most people.
A cluster of thoughts in an idle mind without escape is fatal. Individuals who seek discomfort or are too fragile to express themselves literally for whatever reason search for ways by which they can let it out. Art thus forms the means to express oneself.
“ I vent it out here”- this is why my Medium bio says so. Writing comes naturally to me when I am overwhelmed or am facing an emotion very strongly. The urge to bring it out is so intense that I even fail to get it out in black and white.
Words do not always provide comfort to what we sense or observe. Therefore we have artists to paint and draw. The freedom to express ourselves is infinite when we choose to let it out on a blank canvas. Lines, hues, details, flowers, horizons, shapes, curves-the list has umpteen aspects which contribute to the oneness of himself.
Let’s dig deeper into Modern Art by reflecting at these masterpieces.
Salvador Dali’s : The persistence of a memory
Dali arrived at this conflation of things that look so real, palpable, touchable almost yet are in a state of disillusion. There are vague parts in this painting such as the large pink fleshy form, ants crawling, a slimy clock to name a few.
This painting is a built-in a vivid dreamscape that is analogous to our inner state of mind.
Starry Nights by Vincent Van Gogh
This painting by Vincent represents his direct observations of his view of the countryside from the window at Saint-Paul asylum where he was plaguing depression. His imagination is stirred by emotions and memories.
Art is expansive, infinite, and wholesome. Having gained significant insight let me answer the questions stated above.
- Imagination keeps an artist going. Each fleeting moment is distinct from every other. The subject of an artist’s work could vary a lot. Place, time, situation, emotions, are amongst the other influencers.
“ Loving can hurt, but it is the only thing that makes us feel alive “ Photograph- Ed Sheeran
- Emotions when felt intensely, either lead to bliss or misery. While joy is acceptable and appreciated, sorrow and grief frowned. To turn the tables in their favor, the artists weave words in a way that makes love to heartbreaks. Because it is the best escape ;)
- Upbringing, beliefs, individuality, education, and other constituents build an individual’s perception. Thus, each rhyme, move, shape, and rhythm hold a different meaning to each person.
Art isn’t confined to music, paint, poetry, and dance it is in everything we see, feel and do. It is in our being.
Unleash the artist in you. Scribble out, shake your body with those insane moves, rhyme a snippet, sing out loud, because these will make you alive again.
